Pioneer TS-WX101 Car Subwoofer

f you're looking to fill in some bass in your car for cheap, the Pioneer TS-WX101 may be just the subwoofer you are looking for. I bought a Mazda MX6 about eight months ago which came with a subpar audio system and was looking to upgrade it, but I was on a tight budget. I first replaced the head unit with a Pioneer cassette receiver with CD Changer control, and then replaced all the factory speakers with Pioneer 5x7 custom fit 3-ways. My system still lacked any significant bass, and so I decided to investigate the Subwoofer route. I had a puny Blaupunkt amplifier that I got from Onsale, and I wanted to find a decent subwoofer for the 100 watts RMS that my amp was able to produce. Most car stereo dealers and the big retail stores (Best Buy/Circuit City) gave me stiff shoulder and felt that 100 watts was a pathetic amount of power to send to a Subwoofer, so I should not expect a good end result. I set out to find an efficient subwoofer. In my research I could never find a subwoofer that approached the efficiency of this Pioneer. It is rated at 104db sensitivity, which is quite high. Many Bazooka subwoofer tubes approach or equal this efficiency, but I found them a bit more difficult to install (I did not have a drill to mount the brackets). So my decision stood with this subwoofer, which I purchased online for a mere $125. I could not find a better deal for a quality subwoofer with a ported box.

The subwoofer seems to be designed for SUV/Hatchback use, but it satisfies my needs quite well in the trunk of my MX6. When I desire a bit more bass, I usually lower one of the seatbacks, and that effectively creates the same situation as the subwoofer would see if it were placed in a SUV. My comments on the performance of the subwoofer are based on my needs to fill in some bass, not to wake up the neighbors as I roll by in my car, please keep this in mind. That said, the subwoofer sounds absolutely wonderful in my car. I could not have found a better subwoofer, in my opinion. The bass is tight, and there is not distortion even at 2/3 volume levels. The sub is plenty loud for my ears, but I doubt the subwoofer is loud enough to be heard from too far. Then again, I was not aiming for that. I wanted to satisfy my needs for bass. The subwoofer is very easy to set up, and the solid box stays put in your trunk space without the need for any brackets (they are provided should you choose to secure them). The sound is never boomy, and the sound quality approaches that of my home theater subwoofer, which is an Infinity 150 watt rattler. I am truly satisfied with the performance of this component, and I think I will remain content for a long time. Those wishing for a bit more power may look into the TS-WX121, which has a 12 inch subwoofer inside, and can handle more power. I chose the TS-WX101 for its smaller size to fit in my trunk. Happy Listening...
